My research looks at global health governance and agriculture. I examine the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), the World Health Organisation’s first-ever global treaty, and explore how it addresses the issue of tobacco production. I undertook 7 months of field work among tobacco farmers and traders in South India, and use the empirical case in order to analyse the FCTC’s approach to eradicating tobacco production. I am also adopting a historical approach in understanding how the FCTC’s approach to tobacco producers came about.
The difference my research makes
I hope to impact the ongoing process by which the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control addresses producers and the issue of tobacco production. I also hope to add to the emerging literature on global health governance.
