The SOAS Department of Anthropology and Sociology houses the greatest concentration in the UK of anthropologists working in Africa and Asia (including the Middle East) and their diasporas. The institution’s expertise is extensive in both regional and disciplinary terms: SOAS anthropologists benefit from close working relations with experts in Asian and African languages and in the full range of arts and social sciences applied to Africa and Asia.
Research in the department responds to ESRC Strategic Challenges in the areas of Health and Wellbeing, Environment and Energy, Social Diversity and Global economy, with work on globalisation and new media (particularly in China and Japan), food security issues (notably in Africa and India), global migration, the detailed ethnography of predominantly Muslim societies, and the gamut of issues arising in the application of medical anthropology.
