The IOE is one of the world’s leading institutions for research in education. In the 2008 RAE, 35% of research activity in education at IOE was judged to be of 4* quality – the highest proportion of any institution submitting in the discipline: 65% was rated 3* (internationally excellent) or 4* (world-leading). IOE conducts over one-third of all education research in the UK and over 40% of research in the discipline funded by the research councils. Education has been identified as a priority discipline for capacity-building under the ESRC’s Health of Social Science Strategy.
